Are your labels compliant?

EU directive 1169 / 2011 has been active since December 2014, regulating among others, the way substances in food products that can cause allergies or intolerances, should be presented. It aims to make more distinct to consumers, food ingredients that can cause allergic incidence.

Affected substances and products

  • Cereals containing gluten (wheat, rye, oats etc.)
  • Celery
  • Crustacean shellfish (crab, lobster, shrimp etc.)
  • Eggs
  • Fish
  • Lupins
  • Milk
  • Molluscs
  • Mustard
  • Peanuts
  • Soybeans
  • Sesame seeds
  • Sulphur dioxide
  • Tree nuts (almonds, walnuts, pecans etc.)

Labeling Requirements

The regulation indicates that allergens should be distinctive and presented on labels in the following ways:


  1. Font Size: The minimum required font size of text should be at least 1.2mm
  2. Emphasis: Text should be emphasized either in bold or underlined, or both.

Furthermore, allergens should be included in the ingredient list and not in a separate position on the label.
